The 818 RiDER CLUB is a community based youth sports outreach program.
We want to provide opportunities for people to get involved in the sport of BMX regard less of their financial status.
The 818 RIDERS primary mission is about giving back to the sport -- giving opportunities to people to have fun and be involved local cycling activities.
We want to create a Grass Roots BMX Beginner event called BMX FUN DAY. BMX FUN DAY being an open house event hosted at local area BMX tracks and skate parks. The concept is to spread the word about BMX and make this great sport more accessible to the potential new rider.
Our goal is to provide a place for our generation’s youth to have fun, learn about riding and experience this thing called BMX. We are targeting this effort at the entry-level rider. Although the target participant is entry level, we are encouraging all levels of riders who wants to join in the fun to come on down And join in on the fun! Again -the goal is to get more people riding and having fun on bikes.
The 818 RiDERS basic membership is free, their are no dues or fee's. The majority of 818 Riders activities will be free of charge. The program will be funded by donations and sponsor contributions and administrated by Byron Friday and B.A.D. – BMX Advocacy Development.
For now we will be forming a working alliance with the American Bicycle Assn (www.ababmx.com) and the greater So-Cal BMX tracks for future 818 RIDERS event scheduling. Another big picture goal will be working directly with our local community leaders and the City of Los Angles to develop at least one BMX track open in the future.
The forming of an active and working alliance within local cycling community will enable the 818 RIDERS to develop from concept to reality. The cycling community is legendary for being generous when there is a worthy cause on the table.
WHY WE DO IT
The 818 area does not have any organized BMX activities. Long time BMX rider Byron Friday recognized this unfortunate situation and is taking action hence the 818 RIDER CLUB was born!
Unfortunately a lack of financial resources has prevented far too many potential riders from becoming active in the sport of BMX.
The goal is help new riders discover the fun of BMX riding. The 818 RiDER sponsored events and activities will be promoted by distributing promotional fliers and posters at local bicycle shops, sports retailers and press kits sent to the local news media.
BMX has deep roots in the San Fernando Valley, the problem that exists today for BMXers in the Valley is that there is no one taking charge of the sport and making things happen. What this means is, there needs to be a time and place for people to have the opportunity to ride and have fun on their BMX bikes. The time is right to rebuild the BMX community in the Valley. The bottom line is, the residents of the Valley deserve the opportunity, and a chance to head out to the BMX track and join in on the fun! The 818 Riders program is about taking action and creating opportunities.
ABOUT US
The sport of BMX and cycling in general has given America Bicycle Association - BMX Hall of Farmer, Byron Friday more than he could ask for or ever dreamed of. With that said, it's time to give back to the cycling community a little bit of what's been given to me! You see- the founding fathers of BMX gave me an opportunity to do my thing on my 20" Sting Ray - keeping me out of trouble, and away from my drug infested neighborhood. For this I am forever grateful. BMX changed my life, and three decades later my enthusiasm for the sport is stronger than ever!
Byron Friday's BMX journeys have taken him to the World Hot Bed of Cycling- that place is Europe. Cycling runs deep in the European culture and local Grass Roots Bicycle Clubs of this type are the norm in most European communities. Byron is excited about potential opportunity in applying his experience and knowledge gained in Europe.
